Artist Portraits
Carl is a photographer best known for his innovative covers and portraits for Esquire in the 60s and 70s. He often used symbolism and graphic design to highlight a truth about his subject—his picture of Muhammad Ali, punctured with arrows, is the perfect example. "Heavyweight Champion" was recently recreated by Art Streiber for Esquire's 75th anniversary, with the irreverent gadfly Stephen Colbert standing in for the Champ, demonstrating how relevant Fischer's iconic imagery still is. I photographed Carl at the Motti Hasson Gallery in Chelsea.
